How to Sell on Depop: A Complete Seller Guide

How to sell on Depop step by step: setting up a shop, photography that works on a visual marketplace, 2026 US fees, shipping choices, and what actually sells.

Written by Chris Taylor, founder of FlowLister and active eBay reseller. This page is written as seller research, not a thin feature pitch.

Quick take

No US selling fee

Depop removed its 10 percent selling fee for US and UK sellers in 2024. You now pay only Depop Payments processing at 3.3 percent plus 45 cents per transaction, with buyers paying a marketplace fee at checkout.

Photography is the whole game

Depop browsing is visual and fast. Consistent lighting, a recognisable background, and modelled shots outperform flat-lay catalogue photos on almost every category.

Search terms belong in the description

Buyers search phrases like y2k baby tee, vintage carhartt, or 90s leather jacket. Those exact words need to appear in your listing text to be findable.

You choose who pays shipping

Depop lets you offer a Depop-arranged label or ship on your own, and set whether the buyer or seller covers it. Free shipping baked into the price tends to convert better on lower-priced items.

Foundation

How Depop works

Depop is a peer-to-peer marketplace for secondhand and vintage fashion, built around a social feed rather than a search box. Sellers have a shop that functions like a profile, buyers follow shops they like, and discovery happens through browsing, the explore feed, and search.

The audience is young and style-driven. That shapes everything about selling well here: the same jacket photographed as a catalogue product on a white background will underperform the version styled and modelled, because buyers are shopping for a look as much as a garment.

Process

How to sell on Depop step by step

Setting up takes minutes. Building a shop that sells consistently is about doing four things well: photos, titles, pricing, and shipping speed.

  1. Create your shop: Sign up, pick a handle that reads as a brand rather than a random string, add a profile photo and a short bio saying what you sell and where you ship. Connect your payout details so you can be paid.
  2. Photograph in a consistent style: Use natural light and shoot up to four or more images per item. Modelled shots convert best, followed by hung or styled shots. Always include a close-up of the label and of any flaw.
  3. Write descriptions buyers can search: Include brand, size as marked, actual measurements, material, condition, and the style terms buyers type. Note if sizing runs large or small, which prevents returns and complaints.
  4. Price with negotiation in mind: Check what comparable items sold for, not what they are listed at. Depop buyers use the offer function heavily, so leave a margin you are comfortable conceding.
  5. Choose your shipping method: A Depop-arranged label is simplest and gives automatic tracking. Shipping on your own can be cheaper if you already buy postage elsewhere. Decide whether the buyer pays or you absorb it into the price.
  6. Ship fast and keep it in-app: Post promptly with tracking. Never accept payment outside Depop, no matter how the buyer frames the request, because that voids protection for both of you.

Costs

What Depop costs sellers in 2026

Depop restructured in 2024, dropping the seller selling fee in the US and UK and moving the cost to buyers. For sellers this is one of the cheapest fee structures among major fashion resale platforms.

Inventory

What sells on Depop

Depop's demand is concentrated in identifiable aesthetics rather than in mainstream brands. Understanding which bucket an item falls into tells you whether it belongs here or on eBay.

  • Vintage and true retro: Genuine 80s, 90s, and Y2K pieces, especially branded sportswear and workwear, are Depop's core demand.
  • Streetwear: Carhartt, Dickies, Nike, Adidas, and skate labels sell reliably when condition is honestly described.
  • Y2K and subculture styles: Baby tees, low-rise denim, mesh, and similar trends move quickly when the styling in your photos matches the search term.
  • Designer and archive pieces: High-value items sell, but authentication scrutiny and dispute risk both rise. Photograph tags and hardware in detail.
  • Weak: generic modern high street: Current-season chain-store basics compete with the shops still selling them new. These are usually better bundled or sent elsewhere.

Context

Depop against the alternatives

Depop's zero seller fee makes it attractive on economics alone, but fee structure is only one input. Audience and discovery model matter as much, especially for inventory that is not fashion-forward.

Items that are valuable but not stylish, which describes most of what turns up in a house clearance, do better on a search-driven marketplace. That is a straightforward reason to run Depop alongside eBay rather than instead of it.

  • vs Poshmark: Poshmark takes 20 percent above 15 dollars but has the buyer pay shipping, and skews to mainstream brands and an older buyer. Depop takes no selling fee and skews young and style-led.
  • vs eBay: eBay has vastly more traffic and category depth, and sells by search rather than aesthetic. Better for anything that is not fashion.
  • vs Vinted: Vinted also charges sellers nothing and leans toward everyday clothing at lower prices, with less emphasis on styling.

how to sell on depop FAQ

Short answers to common seller questions about this workflow.

Create a shop with a clear handle and bio, photograph items in consistent natural light with modelled or styled shots, write descriptions containing the style terms buyers search, price with room to accept an offer, choose a shipping method, and post promptly with tracking.
US sellers pay no Depop selling fee. You pay Depop Payments processing of 3.3 percent plus 45 cents per transaction. Buyers pay a separate marketplace fee at checkout, and optional Boosted Listings cost 12 percent when a boosted item sells.
Yes. Listing is free and unlimited. Costs only apply when an item sells, and in the US that is limited to payment processing unless you opt into Boosted Listings.
You decide. Depop lets you charge the buyer for shipping or absorb it into your price, and lets you use a Depop-arranged label or ship on your own. Absorbing shipping into the price often converts better on lower-priced items.
Usually photography and searchability. Depop is a visual feed, so poorly lit or cluttered photos get scrolled past, and listings that omit the style terms buyers actually search never appear in results. Refreshing photos and rewriting titles fixes most stalled shops.
Depop is cheaper for US sellers and better for vintage, streetwear, and youth-led styles. Poshmark reaches an older, brand-driven buyer and has the buyer pay shipping, but takes 20 percent above 15 dollars. Many sellers list on both.
