What the data shows
- Secondhand is growing faster than retail. ThredUp's GlobalData model puts US secondhand apparel up 13% in 2025, against 3.6% for all retail clothing.
- Buyers are already here. 59% of US consumers bought secondhand apparel in 2025, and 62% of Gen Z bought secondhand.
- eBay is still the biggest resale floor: 136 million active buyers in Q2 2026 and more than 2 billion live listings.
- The supply side is people's own stuff. 85% of eBay sellers surveyed for eBay's 2026 Recommerce Report source from their own belongings.
How we measured
Every number was read on the publisher's own page, report PDF or SEC filing on October 15, 2026. Forecasts and estimates are labeled as such. ThredUp's figures come from GlobalData market models and a survey of 3,268 US adults (January to February 2026). eBay's 47% figure comes from a survey of people who already buy secondhand, so it describes secondhand shoppers, not all consumers. ThredUp and eBay both sell resale, so read their numbers with that in mind.
